Mel & Friends

Gengar came into Mel's life without ever formally becoming hers. Somewhere along the way he simply started following her. Maybe he he liked her temperament, or maybe because watching the easily startled Rocket grunt freak out over something harmless was the funniest thing he'd seen all week. Whatever the reason, he stuck around. Back then on a rough evening, Mel hit a rough patch and found herself overwhelmed by her new life, Gengar was the one who noticed. The normally mischievous Pokémon started tormenting the other grunts just to make her laugh, then hid away in her room when his antics inevitably caused trouble. Mel could have treated him like another Pokémon collected for Team Rocket, but instead she protected him and gave him the choice to leave. Gengar chose her. From then on, he might scare her, embarrass her, steal her things, or spend an entire evening glued to his handheld game—but when Mel is genuinely hurting, the jokes stop. He's always right there. Arcanine arrived much more simply. Mel encountered him during one of her assignments and did what she always does when she finds a Pokémon that needs something: she helped him. She fed him, cared for him, and treated him with the same gentle patience she'd learned working on the farm. When it was time for Mel to continue on her way, Arcanine followed. She tried sending him back. He followed. She traveled farther. He followed. Eventually Mel had to accept that the enormous, lovable Pokémon had apparently made a decision without consulting her. Arcanine had found someone he trusted completely, and as far as he was concerned, wherever Mel happened to be was where he belonged. Neither relationship began with Mel throwing a Poké Ball. That's what makes the little family she ended up with so important to her. Arcanine loves her with uncomplicated devotion: stay close, keep her safe, receive scratches, repeat. Gengar's affection is rowdier and more childish—he'll happily make Mel chase him across a field while riding Arcanine like a horse, but he'll quietly sit beside her on a riverbank when she needs him. Mel gives both of them the same loyalty in return. She went out into the world expecting a job, travel, and a chance to become less shy; somehow, without ever looking for them, she also found two Pokémon who independently decided Mel was their person.
