Judy Jones, Galactic Ranger!

"Startling Science Fiction!" magazine's June 1940 issue introduced readers to Judy Jones, an extraordinary member of the Galactic Rangers, the galaxy's premier law enforcement agency. Judy herself was featured on the magazine's front cover, firing her Colt Cosmic Blaster ray gun at an alien miscreant on a far-off desert planet. The story was pretty standard science-fiction fare: attractive Judy and her fellow rangers, Steve "Surefire" Simmons and Mike "Mad Dog" Mulroney, were investigating an alien gunrunning gang operation. There was plenty of action, with Judy and the boys tangling with gang members, leading to a climactic shootout in a shabby ghost town on a mining planet. The June issue sold quite well; so well that the magazine's editorial staff promised readers there would be more Judy Jones stories.
