"After Ms. Watanabe and the sales clerk had taken cover, I started engaging the Boomer." "Ah, very good—continue, Sergeant." *EMP ready*—the indicator lights up in my field of vision, and electric energy surges through my arms. It doesn't seem to have noticed me yet, and I have no intention of squandering that advantage. Its attention is focused on something outside the shop. I can see the flashing blue lights of squad cars; that must be the Anti-Boomer unit. Bursts of assault rifle fire cut through the silence of the night. Judging by the sound, though, they aren't doing much damage. I rush out of the shop and onto the street to assess the situation. The Anti-Boomer unit is firing with everything they've got, but their small-caliber rifles can't penetrate the armor of this military-grade model. The machine lets out a bone-chilling shriek before leaping up the side of the building toward the roof. Finally, amidst the chaos, I spot two familiar faces. "LEON! DALEY!" I shout. "We need heavier weapons, or we'll never get through its armor!" "Hana? What are you doing here?" Leon asks in disbelief. "Long story... that'll have to wait. Do you have an assault cannon with you?" "No, Hana—we're just the vanguard; the main squad is still ten minutes away!" Daley replies. "Shit... Okay, it's off the street—that's a start. Listen, secure the area; I'll try to pin it down on the roof until the main squad gets here," I say, and sprint off. "What?!? Fuck, Hana, stay here—it's too dangerous!" I hear Leon shouting, but the EMP is the only chance we've got. After a few minutes that feel like an eternity, I catch up to it. This time I have no advantage; he spots me the moment I step onto the roof and launches his attack. Damn, he’s fast—I dodge to the side as his claws slice through the air where my head had been just milliseconds before. I use the momentum to counter, but he anticipates it and dodges in turn. If his systems are functioning even minimally, he should have detected the EMP. He noticeably shifts into a defensive stance, waiting for me to make a careless mistake. The exchange continues: attack, dodge, counter. He’s exploiting the fact that he doesn't tire—damn it. "HANA! TAKE COVER!" A voice cuts through my concentration just as a burst of gunfire hits the Boomer. Daley—that fool—followed me... The machine shifts its attention and targets Daley. This is my chance; I focus on the unprotected section of its spine, just above the hips. That’s this model's weak point! I strike the weak spot with all my might, discharge the EMP, and immediately pull back. "Get away from him!" commands a voice with a mechanical distortion. I look back and only then notice the white power suit standing in the corner of the roof. "A Knight Saber?" the words escape my lips. No sooner have I spoken than the power suit sprints toward the Boomer with superhuman speed. Blades extend from its arms, and in a single fluid motion, it decapitates the machine and crushes its skull with a boot. Silence is all that remains; for a moment, we simply stare at each other. Earth as we know it is no more, it’s been ravaged and torn apart by bloody conflict. We don’t live on the surface anymore, we live among the stars in giant space colonies while the war goes on below. Who knows if we’ll ever be able to return… some of us have never seen the sea, the real sea. Some of us have never climbed a real tree, or felt an actual breeze; some of us probably never will. We’ve been deprived of so many things because of the war… and it’s all because of Nectar. Some time ago, scientists discovered a new natural resource that they named Nectar. Nectar was unlike anything they had seen before, capable of storing energy and powering things better than anything that came before. After its discovery, discussions began on how to use this new resource; that’s when the divide started. Some of the world’s leaders wanted to use it for humanitarian efforts to help with the betterment of mankind. Other very influential leaders saw its potential in economic and militaristic growth and wanted each nation to have its own unregulated usage of Nectar. Before long, the Union divided in two. On one side were those that favored the humanitarian approach, known as the United Earth Alliance. Those that opted for the other side became the National Separatist Federation. The nations that comprised the NSF left the Union and tensions grew steadily for some time. The UEA and the NSF started competing for Nectar, which eventually led to small fights and skirmishes for deposits. Little did we know at the time, things would get much worse. The UEA began their efforts using Nectar to make new medical technology, such as highly advanced prosthetics, surgical equipment, and many other things. They even began finding ways to take the population into space and launched the first ever space colony, which they named Eden. Meanwhile, the NSF did as they planned and began developing new weapons using Nectar as their power source. This led to the creation of the Cybers, powerful mechs that were unrivaled by anything seen at the time. One Cyber could destroy an entire fleet of ships all on its own. They were stronger, faster, and more durable than anything the UEA had. With the Cybers, the NSF believed they could easily take control of the earth’s Nectar supply by force. The world would not be the same afterwards. The NSF began seizing Nectar reservoirs all over the planet, forcing the UEA to retreat further and further until space was their only option. With their Cybers, the NSF chased them into the stars. And then it happened. During the battle, a nuclear warhead found its way to Eden and completely decimated the colony, taking the lives of everyone living in it. Countless civilian lives were lost and the devastation caused a ripple that would change everything. Seeing this as the final straw, the UEA committed everything they had to stopping the NSF at any cost. The tragedy of Eden lit the flame of war that would last until now. The UEA began developing their own Cybers and the tides of war have shifted. With the increasing devastation on the planet, the NSF built their own space colonies, and now Earth serves at the battleground for these two sides. The only ones living on Earth are those fighting the war, and the families of those who are leading the war efforts. Now, 10 years later, the conflict rages on with no end in sight. It’s entirely possible that we may never go back home to Earth. We may never see the sun rise and set with our own eyes. We might never feel the same pull of gravity we used to. Both are doing well; they have no injuries, just shock from the events," I reply. The whole affair affected Akiko more deeply than I let on, but that’s not relevant here. Still, I worry about her getting dragged into this mess or—worse—getting hurt. It’s bad enough that I’m on Genom’s hit list; she doesn’t deserve this. I’ll do everything in my power to prevent it! The Chief’s voice snaps me out of my thoughts. "The report isn't the only reason I called you all here today. Lieutenant Yamamuras undercover mission provided the evidence we needed." Ryu? My heart skips a beat at the mention of his name. Images of happier times flash through my mind. "Sergeant Amano? Are you listening?" The reprimand pulls me back to reality. "Good! What do recent events have in common?" he asks, concluding his thought. "The OMS!" he answers. OMS—the very name sends a chill down my spine. The mission where we were betrayed—the one that left me with this scar—was all about securing the OMS. "Sir, do we know more about it now, and how the betrayal happened?" "Yes! The acronym OMS stands for 'Over Mind-Control System,' and it allows for the mass control of Boomers. What connects the Aqua City incident with the explosion at the Genom lab?" the Chief asks the room. "Aqua City was officially destroyed by a malfunction in a USSD laser satellite, and the cause of the Genom lab explosion hasn't been determined yet," I reply. "And this is where Ryu's information comes into play. Shortly before the destruction of Aqua City, a Genom helicopter was on the scene, as was the mercenary group known as the Knight Sabers. Before the satellite fired, the helicopter had moved away but was still hovering over Pier 17." "Wait a minute!" I interrupt the Chief, trying to grasp what both the body and the Knight Sabers have to do with this. "That means the man's body..." "Exactly—the body of the man who tortured you, Sergeant, was planted there," the Chief continues. "Just before the lab exploded, a communication with the USSD satellite was recorded. This time, it was a precision strike that destroyed the lab. Without the recording, the satellite's use would have gone unnoticed; in this instance, too, the signal originated from inside the facility. This leads to the conclusion that an attempt was likely being made to cover up illegal weapons testing. Sergeant Amano, does the name Roy Chang ring a bell?" he asks. "Yes, his wife Irene was murdered... just a few days... later by the Boomer bodyguard... Amber." The realization of the full scope of events makes me pause. "Exactly! Ryu was able to provide the missing evidence linking all of this to that man. Brian J. Maison!" he concludes. I knew it—and finally, we can prove it! "Sir, how do we proceed?" "We were also able to identify the mole; his codename is Adam." Adam? I clench my fists, trying to keep my anger in check. "I am authorizing an operation against the facility where Maison is located! Your objective is to meet up with Lieutenant Yamamura and arrest Maison and Adam! The Knight Sabers will also be involved; they’ll create a diversion. Sergeant, I know you’ve worked with them before, so that shouldn't be a problem. Since our objectives overlap, hiring them wasn't difficult. That’s all—get ready; you move out at 0100!" Shadow Squad responds in unison with a resounding "Yes, sir!" We leave the briefing room and head to the armory; there is only an hour and a half left until the mission begins. We suit up in our full-body armor and mentally prepare ourselves for what lies ahead. I look into the faces of my comrades—Chris, Parda, Terror2, and the twins, Warm and Ice. I trust each of them with my life; now that we are finally back together, nothing can stop us—neither Genom nor Maison! Just you wait—your ass is mine, Maison, and you’re going to pay for everything!
