CYBERS:: CH. 1 - Transfer

0500 hours. The low hum of the truck was drowned out by his thoughts as he stared out the window. Transfer orders. His brother told him it was just a routine cycling of personnel, but that couldn’t be it. Everyone at Alpha Base was there for a reason. This almost felt like a punishment. The orders arrived so suddenly he hardly even had a chance to say goodbye. By sunrise, he was on the plane. And now, he was barreling towards his new station, Omega Base. He hadn’t heard much about Omega Base prior, just that it was out of the way and was mostly involved in auxiliary missions. It was a relatively smaller base compared to Alpha, but his brother assured him that he would still be of service there. “It’s just temporary,” his brother said, “I’ll get this sorted out as soon as possible.” His brother’s words echoed in his head as the truck approached the main security gate. With a flash of a badge, the gate opened and the truck rolled past. He noticed the security guards, they all looked relatively young. As the truck pulled away, he glanced forward at the arrival area, where he saw a small group waiting. Along with a small transport vehicle were 3 people, chief among them a blonde-haired woman. The truck slowed to a stop in front of them and the driver exited. He also got out and went for his bags in the back of the truck as the woman approached. “Alex Bécquer?” Her question rang out in a stern voice that almost sounded like a command. He nodded and straightened out into a salute. “Yeah,” he muttered, “that’s me. Reporting for duty.” She eyed him from top to bottom with a cold analysis, then nodded in approval to his salute. “At ease. I’m Emily Franz, Chief secretary,” she said, “welcome to Omega Base.” She motioned to her two subordinates and they approached, taking Alex’s bags and moving them to the transport vehicle. “Glad to be here,” Alex muttered. She gave a small nod in response. “Please,” she said as she motioned to the transport, “we’ll take you to your living quarters and show you around.” Alex shuffled to the vehicle and boarded, as did Emily and her two officers. The transport slowly started up and started down the designated driving path. Alex sat awkwardly in the back, like a child that had been scolded. Emily kept her gaze out the window as if monitoring the base as the truck drove. “So,” she started, “I read your file. You’re Alan’s brother.” Alex looked forward, glancing around the front seat looking at the back of her head. “That’s right,” he replied, “do you know him well?” She smiled faintly and responded, “You could say that. We were in the academy together. Real troublemaker.” Alex laughed softly under his breath and nodded. “Yeah, always has been,” he said. She then glanced at the rearview mirror at Alex, her violet irises making him feel slightly nervous. “Makes you wonder,” she said in a distinctly flat tone, “why’d you get transferred here? Surely he has enough pull at Alpha to keep his brother around.” Alex’s eyes fluttered down to the gear shift and shrugged. Emily watched his reaction, then turned her gaze back to the window. “Stop here,” she commanded. The truck stopped in front of a small complex, only 2 floors and not too wide. They all stepped out of the vehicle and Emily’s men went to retrieve Alex’s belongings. “Here we are,” she said, “the men's dorms. Probably not much compared to Alpha Base, but it’s what we’ve got. You’re in number 13.” They moved towards 13, on the second floor at the far end, and opened the door to reveal a small room with only necessities; there was a bed with a nightstand, a desk, a single window, and a second door that led to a small bathroom with a sink and toilet. “Showers are on the first floor, through the double doors,” she said in her stern tone. The men set down Alex’s bags and stood beside Emily, waiting for command. “Now come,” she continued, “We’ll show you where you’ll be working.” The next stop was the main hangar, only a few minutes away. It was unexpectedly big compared to what Alex envisioned, but it also housed Cybers so it would need to be. Upon entering, immediately the smell of cigarettes filled his nostrils causing him to cough. Greeting them were 4 mechanics, all on a smoke break. One of them turned, his smile holding a lit cigarette. He was tall, dark skinned, and muscular. As he turned fully, he revealed his arm, made of carbon fiber and metal, a cybernetic replacement. Alex quickly glanced away from it. “Well, well, well,” the man said in a deep, raspy voice, “Queen Emily, to what do we owe the pleasure?” Emily gave an amused smile and the two saluted each other. “This is Alex Bécquer,” she replied. The man nodded and said, “The new recruit. Welcome.” The man extended his cybernetic hand, to which Alex looked at with some hesitancy. After a split-second panic, Alex reached out and shook his hand. “Name’s Lewis,” the man said, “welcome to the team.” __________ END OF CHAPTER 1 __________
