Dawn and Henry at the Valentine's party, part 1

The apartment is packed with people chatting, red and pink decorations everywhere, while the sound system plays cheesy love songs. Dawn and Henry are visiting Dawn's friend for a Valentine's day party. They are standing near the kitchen counter - the area with least amount of decorations - with drinks, both of them clearly the only people who showed up to the party without a date. Dawn leans back against the counter, long black hair falling over one shoulder, her dark lipstick a little smudged from the wine she's having. "Damn," she mutters, watching another couple make out against the fridge. "This is brutal. Everyone paired off like it's a fucking zoo exhibit out here!" Dawn glances at Henry, smirking. "Glad you agreed to be my plus-one, Henry. Otherwise I'd be the sad girl standing alone in the corner looking like I wandered into the wrong party." "Yeah, no kidding! Looks like love is in the air for all these people. Happy to help you out here, Dawn." Henry reassures Dawn. He takes a sip of his drink. "It's cute, I guess. I thought these kinds of events aren't your... thing, you know. What made you want to come here, anyway?" She snorts softly and rolls her eyes, though there's a small smile under the dark lipstick. "Yeah, not exactly my usual scene. I only came because Sarah guilt-tripped me into it. Said I needed to 'get out more' and stop rotting in the dark apartment listening to Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy. Classic cheerful-friend who's got everything figured out bullshit." She takes a sip of her drink, shifting her weight so her hip presses against the counter. "Honestly? I figured if I was gonna be forced to watch people couple up, at least I'd have my best friend here so I wouldn't look completely pathetic. Misery loves company and all that." Her eyes flick over to him for a second longer than usual before looking away again. "What about you? You could've stayed home too. You're not exactly the 'Valentine's party' type either." "Yeah, you are right. I've also been pretty much either holed up in the apartment or working. I feel like a damn robot..." he confesses in slight frustration. He comes up with an idea to try to cheer up Dawn. "What do you think, Dawn? Do I make a good robot? Beep! Boop!" he asks and begins to mime robot movements, trying to get her to laugh. A short, surprised laugh escapes her before she can stop it. She immediately presses her lips together and looks away, a little embarrassed that your dumb robot impression actually got her. "Oh my god, stop," she mutters, though the corner of her mouth is still twitching. "You're the worst. Beep-boop my ass." She shoves his shoulder lightly with the side of her hand. Her cheeks feel a bit warmer than they should under the pale makeup. "You're a shitty robot, by the way. Too much personality. Real robots don't make their roommates almost spit wine everywhere." She takes another sip, trying to compose herself, then glances at him again. "But yeah... I get it. Feels like we've both been stuck on autopilot for months now. Work, sleep, rinse, repeat. No dating, no... anything. Just two sad singles sharing a couch and takeout." Her voice softens a little on the last part, the sass dropping for a second as she looks at the couples around them again. "It has indeed been a long while that... I've had someone," Henry says now in a more serious tone. "I sometimes forget what it's like. Does that happen to you?" She goes quiet for a second, fingers tracing the rim of her glass. The usual sarcasm doesn't come right away. "...Yeah. It does." She glances at Henry, then looks down at her drink. "Sometimes I catch myself wondering if I even remember how to do any of it. You know, flirting, dating, the whole thing. Not that I was ever great at it. And then I see people like this and hits me how fucking lonely it actually is." Dawn lets out a short breath and forces a small, crooked smile. "Sorry. That got way darker than it should. Blame the wine and heart-shaped balloons." Her eyes stay on Henry for a little longer this time, softer than usual. [TO BE CONTINUED]
