SAUNA - MOMENTS LATER: Madame Li starts undoing her hair. - “I had this sauna specially built and isolated. No signals can come in or out and I don’t allow recording devices like the one your clever friends placed on your necklace. So everything we talk here, stays here.” She completely lets her hair loose and rests her scalp letting out a sigh of relief. Then: - “Detective, you might think of me as a mean woman. I assure you: I’m not. But you have to understand that I’ve had to hustle my way through life. You don’t get to survive and become this powerful without learning to put a thick armor around your heart.” Madame Li’s attention starts to drift. After a brief moment she continues - thoughtful: - “The world knows about me only what I’ve let them to believe. I have never told this story before, never. Probably because I was too embarrassed to admit it, probably because I wanted to feel important when talking about me, but…my story is FAR from perfect. - “Why tell it to me… why now?” Asks Pearl. - “When I’m done telling you my story, you will understand” Madame Li leans back, drops the gaze and inhales deeply, as someone who is about to take a deep dive. - “I was born in a little village far from any big city in China. My mother died when I was very little so I have no memories of her. I was raised by my father who taught me everything he knew about martial arts and life. He was a single father and a well respected leader of the community, so the only way he knew of raising me was through martial arts and discipline” - “There is no training the body without training the mind!!” He used to say. - “Get up on those books and read to me. Keep your balance AND DON’T DROP THE WATER!!!!!” Madame Li laughs. - “Those were his favorite words for me: Higher! Faster! Higher! Faster! — AGAIN!!” - “I never though he was being to harsh, I knew he was preparing me. - “I told the whole village I was gonna be the greatest warrior who ever lived. I told them they were looking at a legend (smiles) they all laughed and cheered me up. (Li takes a pause) “This little skinny girl… I’ll show them all” I thought. Detective Pearl has been listening closely. Li is lost in her memories. - “My village was very prosperous town. Soil was rich and the people were hard working folk. And like many places like that, mean people took advantage of all the riches the land has to offer. A group of ill-intentioned people were abusing the town, sucking on the people’s labor for their own benefit. My father was a big leader in the community and was fighting against them” - “One night, they broke into the house, I heard muffled voices and sounds, a struggle. I was scared. Then silence again. After a while I decided to go to my father’s room. (A pause) And that was the last time I saw him.
