Never really knew my father. My mother? Hardest working woman I’ve ever known, but that’s a story for another time. All I can tell you is that I’ve spent most of my life on my own. Never had a problem with smoking or my love for whiskey. Never had to answer to nobody about my personal choices. Until now.” - “Being in a relationship with Barry has changed my life completely. Now I go to bed and wake up with someone that I love by my side. At first it took a lot of getting used to, but I want to keep it that way” - “He has never said anything about my smoking or drinking. Not a word. But lately… I’ve been having this recurrent dream where I sneak out in the middle of the night to get some smokes. They shut the lights down and close the store but I don’t want to leave. Barry appears looking for me but I hide, in my dream I don’t want him to know I’m smoking even though he has never said anything to me about it. He yells and yells my name, he gets really furious!” Pearl takes one last puff and flicks away her unfinished cigarette. - “I’ll quit smoking if he asks me. I love Barry and I’ll do anything to keep him by my side. He’ll be home any minute now. I have to be a big girl and ask him” Pearl hears the apartment door opening. She looks in the direction of the main entrance and starts walking to face the music. - “Honey, I’m home!” Barry yells from a distance. Pearl crosses the living room to meet him. - “Hey, baby” Pearl says in her softest tone. She gets close and tip toes for a kiss. Barry sees her face and knows something’s going on. - “Barry, we need to talk. . .” Barry feels his blood falling down to the ground. (‘Shit! She said Barry not Baby, she is gonna break up with me’) He thinks.
