Magic the Gathering Girls: The Lore of Liliana Vess

Liliana was originally born as Liliana Vess on the plane of Dominaria. Brilliant and ambitious, she feared aging and death above all else. Her obsession with eternal youth and power led her to study dark magic and necromancy. After accidentally causing the death of her brother while trying to cure him, Liliana turned even further toward forbidden magic. Seeking immortality and greater power, she made demonic contracts with four powerful demons. In exchange for youth, beauty, and magical strength, the demons claimed ownership of her soul. Over centuries, Liliana became a feared planeswalker — a mage capable of traveling between worlds. She mastered necromancy, commanding undead armies and draining life from enemies. Eventually, Liliana regretted her bargains and began hunting down the demons to free herself from the contracts. She killed them one by one using powerful artifacts such as the Chain Veil, though the artifact itself slowly corrupted her mind and body. Liliana later joined the Gatewatch, a group of planeswalkers dedicated to protecting the Multiverse from massive threats like the Eldrazi and Nicol Bolas. Though often selfish and sarcastic, she formed genuine bonds with the team. Her biggest turning point came during the war against Nicol Bolas on Ravnica. Bolas controlled Liliana through her final contract and forced her to command an undead dragon army called the Dreadhorde. At the climax of the battle, Liliana defied Bolas despite knowing it could kill her. Gideon Jura sacrificed himself to save Liliana from the magical punishment tied to her betrayal. His death deeply changed her, pushing her toward redemption rather than selfish ambition. After the war, Liliana went into hiding under the alias “Professor Onyx,” eventually becoming a teacher at Strixhaven University. Though still morally gray and dangerous, she gradually became less ruthless and more protective of others.
