Behind the cold bars of black stone, Peach’s entire kingdom had shrunk to a single narrow window overlooking the smoldering mountain range. She sat upon the stone ledge, her slender fingers tracing the hem of her pink gown—now frayed and stained with the soot of a desolate land. She no longer counted the passing days by the sun, for the sky here was forever choked by leaden clouds. Instead, she measured time by the withered jasmine petals she painstakingly tended in a chipped teacup. Each fallen petal felt like a thinning thread of hope for a fragile rescue. Occasionally, the sound of iron chains dragging along the stone corridor tore through the suffocating silence. Her captor did not wish her dead; he wanted her to be a magnificent yet mute ornament in his collection of conquests. He brought her delicacies and jewelry that sparkled like morning dew, but they all tasted of possession and confinement. Peach gazed into the distance, where the vibrant red mushroom forests faded into the gathering gloom. She wondered if the wind there still carried the scent of freedom and the laughter of her people. She did not cry. Her tears had long since dried, replaced by a quiet, enduring resolve. She began to embroider a map of the fortress onto an old tablecloth, memorizing the rhythm of the guards' footsteps and every hairline fracture in the stone walls.
