Coming to bed?

The bedroom was lit only by the soft glow of a bedside lamp. She sat on the edge of the bed, pretending to read while stealing glances toward the doorway. Her partner was still in the other room, occupied with work that seemed far more important than it should have been this late at night. She sighed quietly. After a moment, she slipped off her glasses and set the book aside. Gathering her courage, she rose and walked to the doorway. "Are you planning on staying up all night?" she asked. Her partner looked up from across the room. The shy smile she offered was enough to make them pause. "No," they replied. "Just finishing a few things." She nodded, then hesitated. Usually she would leave it at that. Tonight was different. "Well..." Her fingers traced the edge of the doorway. "I was hoping you might come to bed soon." A playful smile appeared on her partner's face. "Were you?" The attention immediately made her blush. "Maybe." Her partner set aside what they were doing and gave her their full attention. The confidence she'd gathered nearly disappeared under that gaze. "I just..." She laughed nervously. "It's silly." "What is?" She looked away for a moment before meeting their eyes again. "I miss you." The words hung in the air. Not dramatic. Not desperate. Just honest. Her partner stood and crossed the room. By the time they reached her, her heart was racing. "You could have said that earlier." "I know." A gentle hand brushed against hers. "Come on," she said softly, a hint of teasing finally finding its way into her voice. "I've been waiting." The smile her partner gave her made the butterflies in her stomach multiply. Together they walked back to the bedroom, the distance between them disappearing long before they reached the bed.
