Atalanta was one of the most famous female heroes in Greek mythology, known for her incredible speed, hunting skill, and independence. Unlike many women in Greek myths, she was raised and celebrated as a warrior equal to men. Atalanta became famous during the hunt for the monstrous Calydonian Boar, a beast sent by Artemis to punish the kingdom of Calydon. Many legendary heroes joined the hunt, including Meleager. Atalanta was initially mocked because she was a woman, but she proved herself by being the first hunter to wound the boar with an arrow. Meleager later killed the beast and awarded its hide to her, recognizing her bravery.
