"Oh, is that so..." the woman says dejectedly.

She wasn't your wife. She couldn't be. Such a person didn't exist, you were sure of it.

But then... who was she? And why did she look so sad now?

Her outstretched hand pulled back against her bosom, pressing into her soft breast. An almost embarrassed flush came to her cheeks as she looked back at you.

"I see, it was wrong of me to be so presumptuous. I thought after this long you might still have been easy prey. But you truly have bounced back."

She slides the covers off of her as you ponder her words. The sight of her naked body pulls your eyes, muddles your thoughts just a bit. Without even trying to, she makes it hard to ponder too deeply.

You almost expect another advance, an objection of some sort to your refusal. But her sad frown shifts ever so slightly into a sad smile as she slinks past you and over the edge of the bed, standing upright in your bedroom. The morning light dances across her back and sends shimmers through her glossy hair. Her breasts and hips sway elegantly. She is still gorgeous, but you can feel the mesmerizing pull of her skin and her scent and her voice slowly lightening its hold on you.

"Well then, I suppose this is goodbye." she says. "Enjoy this second chance, don't waste it."

She turns to leave and you grab her hand. You didn't fall for her ploy, whatever it might have been for, but that doesn't mean you want her to leave. Despite it all, something about her still calls to you.

You object. You ask her to stay, to talk to you, to tell you what's going on and if the Woods and all that had transpired there was just a dream after all.

But she shakes her head softly. "That isn't how this works. I'll miss you, but for now I have to go. The Woods are where I belong, and you have chosen to leave them behind."

She gives you a gentle wave. "Goodbye."

You blink and the woman has vanished without a trace. It would be easy to claim that she had never been there at all, but the covers still lay where she had left them, and her soft floral perfume, like wildflowers covered in droplets after the rain, lingered in the air. You feel a weight in your hand, the same hand that had been holding so tightly to her arm just moments ago.

In your hand, rests a single pure white flower. An oddly comforting sight.

You leave it in the windowsill facing the forest behind your house. Somehow, it multiplies over the passing days, filling the vase and keeping her fragrance in the air. You don't see her again.

---

Months later, you find yourself sitting alone at a coffee shop you frequent. Not a day has gone by that you haven't thought about her, the mysterious lady of the woods. You kept her flowers alive and well watered, as though your love for them would somehow reach her wherever she had disappeared to. But after so long you had almost started to give up on that feeling. Still, this morning you watered the flowers as you always did.

The cafe door opens and your thoughts drift back towards the coffee in your hand, or the coming work week. Then, you smell it. Her perfume. Bold, fresh, not the least diluted by time or distance, not the lingering echo of the vase in your bedroom, but the full unmistakable aroma of the Woods.

You turn to look, and impossibly, there she stands. She is dressed like a normal person, no flowers or golden leaves on her head. But it had to be her, right? She was real after all, wasn't she?

You hesitate for a moment, but your mind was made up already. You offer to pay for her coffee if she would be willing to talk to you for a moment, and to your delight and horror, she accepts. She doesn't seem to remember you, even though you remember her. But she seems happy to talk to you. The conversation flows like water in the forest creek and before long the two of you have ordered more coffee.

"You know," she said, her voice full of excitement. "There's something about you. You seem... like a nature guy, am I right?"

You tell her you like to hike, but you haven't been in quite a while. You don't tell her about your last hike.

She smiles and leans forward, her eyes sparkling. "What if I told you I know a great little trail not too far from here. Its just over the ridge line. Its a little deep in the woods out there, but that's the point of a hike right? What do you say, you want to go with me sometime?"

You know the trail.

You thought that you would have to go back there to find her. You hadn't though she would find you first.

You look back into her eyes and your heart flutters.
