Did you know that there were more number 1 music hits between the 1970s and 1990s? This is largely in part of record sales. Back before the invention of streaming and even CDs people bought records and if you've ever played records you know you just drop the needle on the turntable and let that record play from top to bottom. You were kind of forced to listen to every track on the record therefore finding that song 4 was better than song 1.
Now-a-days you can skip to your favorite song and a lot of gems on the album might get over looked.
