Case File 3: The Shadow Squad Part 3 Classified: For Official Use Only "All right, I understand. Thank you for your report, Sergeant Amano. How are Ms. Watanabe and the shop owner—what was her name again?" "Ms. Stingray, sir. Both are doing well; they have no injuries, just shock from the events," I reply. The whole affair affected Akiko more deeply than I let on, but that’s not relevant here. Still, I worry about her getting dragged into this mess or—worse—getting hurt. It’s bad enough that I’m on Genom’s hit list; she doesn’t deserve this. I’ll do everything in my power to prevent it! The Chief’s voice snaps me out of my thoughts. "The report isn't the only reason I called you all here today. Lieutenant Yamamuras undercover mission provided the evidence we needed." Ryu? My heart skips a beat at the mention of his name. Images of happier times flash through my mind. "Sergeant Amano? Are you listening?" The reprimand pulls me back to reality. "Good! What do recent events have in common?" he asks, concluding his thought. "The OMS!" he answers. OMS—the very name sends a chill down my spine. The mission where we were betrayed—the one that left me with this scar—was all about securing the OMS. "Sir, do we know more about it now, and how the betrayal happened?" "Yes! The acronym OMS stands for 'Over Mind-Control System,' and it allows for the mass control of Boomers. What connects the Aqua City incident with the explosion at the Genom lab?" the Chief asks the room. "Aqua City was officially destroyed by a malfunction in a USSD laser satellite, and the cause of the Genom lab explosion hasn't been determined yet," I reply. "And this is where Ryu's information comes into play. Shortly before the destruction of Aqua City, a Genom helicopter was on the scene, as was the mercenary group known as the Knight Sabers. Before the satellite fired, the helicopter had moved away but was still hovering over Pier 17." "Wait a minute!" I interrupt the Chief, trying to grasp what both the body and the Knight Sabers have to do with this. "That means the man's body..." "Exactly—the body of the man who tortured you, Sergeant, was planted there," the Chief continues. "Just before the lab exploded, a communication with the USSD satellite was recorded. This time, it was a precision strike that destroyed the lab. Without the recording, the satellite's use would have gone unnoticed; in this instance, too, the signal originated from inside the facility. This leads to the conclusion that an attempt was likely being made to cover up illegal weapons testing. Sergeant Amano, does the name Roy Chang ring a bell?" he asks. "Yes, his wife Irene was murdered... just a few days... later by the Boomer bodyguard... Amber." The realization of the full scope of events makes me pause. "Exactly! Ryu was able to provide the missing evidence linking all of this to that man. Brian J. Maison!" he concludes. I knew it—and finally, we can prove it! "Sir, how do we proceed?" "We were also able to identify the mole; his codename is Adam." Adam? I clench my fists, trying to keep my anger in check. "I am authorizing an operation against the facility where Maison is located! Your objective is to meet up with Lieutenant Yamamura and arrest Maison and Adam! The Knight Sabers will also be involved; they’ll create a diversion. Sergeant, I know you’ve worked with them before, so that shouldn't be a problem. Since our objectives overlap, hiring them wasn't difficult. That’s all—get ready; you move out at 0100!" Shadow Squad responds in unison with a resounding "Yes, sir!" We leave the briefing room and head to the armory; there is only an hour and a half left until the mission begins. We suit up in our full-body armor and mentally prepare ourselves for what lies ahead. I look into the faces of my comrades—Chris, Parda, Terror2, and the twins, Warm and Ice. I trust each of them with my life; now that we are finally back together, nothing can stop us—neither Genom nor Maison! Just you wait—your ass is mine, Maison, and you’re going to pay for everything! Ryu, I’m finally going to see you again; I’ve waited so long for this, and I allow myself a brief moment to bask in the memories. You reached the end of this file.
