Mega Tokyo 2032 AD File 2.2: The Chang Case Part 3

Case File 2.2: The Chang Case Part 3 Classified: For Official Use Only Brian J. Mason—I need to have Chris run a background check on him; that guy has more to hide than I’m comfortable with. I’ll deal with that later, though; first, I should speak with the three women. There’s a park located in front of the Genom building; I hope they’re waiting for me there—I desperately need some answers. A few minutes later, I find the three of them. The woman who was attacked by... what was her name again? Oh, right—Amber. She is sitting on a set of stairs, visibly shaken; her face is injured, and tears are streaming down her cheeks. The other two look dejected; the woman with long brunette hair is still rubbing her neck. She’s lucky Amber didn’t break her neck. They notice me as I approach them. Hana: Thanks for waiting for me. I honestly didn't expect you to still be here. I’m Hana Amano—a detective with the Homicide Division of the AD Police. And you are? Sobbing, the woman on the stairs answers first, followed by the dark-haired woman. Irene: Irene Chang. Linna: I’m Linna, and this is Priss. We’re friends of Irene’s. The long-haired brunette looks at me with disdain but says nothing. She’s reckless—and that’s dangerous. I shouldn’t underestimate her. Hana: Okay. Would one of you please explain what happened back there in the lobby? I didn't realize what was going on until Irene was already on the floor and Priss was being strangled by that Boomer bodyguard. Yes—Amber is a Boomer. It’s strange: when I mention that Amber is a Boomer, Irene is the only one who adopts a look of concern; the other two don't seem surprised at all. Hana: Irene, what did you want from Mr. Mason? Irene: He was my husband’s supervisor. Roy was at the facility that exploded, and... Her voice breaks, and she begins to sob as her grief overwhelms her. Irene: I... still... haven't... heard... from him... Her composure shatters amidst her tears, and she simply weeps uncontrollably. Roy? Roy Chang? I read that name on the list of victims. She doesn't know yet... She came here clinging to the hope that he might still be alive. I walk over to her and take her hand. Hana: I’m so sorry. Your husband didn't survive the explosion. I don't know the exact circumstances yet, but his name was on the list of victims. The expressions on the other two women's faces darken; Irene looks to be on the verge of a nervous breakdown. By telling her the truth, I’ve stripped away the very last shred of hope she had that her husband was still alive. Priss: Oh, just great, Ms. AD Police. I’ve had enough—I’m leaving. Priss pushes herself away from the pillar she’d been leaning against and walks away. I don't stop her, as I’m still occupied with Irene. Linna, however, stays behind and walks over to join us. Linna: Please don't be angry with Priss. She... hasn't had very good experiences—neither with Boomers nor with the AD Police. Hana: I understand. Linna, right? Did Irene do anything that might have given Amber a reason to use force? Linna: No, she just briefly touched Mason on the arm, and then... Hana: I understand. Thank you for the information. Could you please look after Irene? She really shouldn't be alone right now. Linna: Of course. I’ll do that. Linna helps the still-sobbing Irene to her feet, says her goodbyes, and leads her away. I stay behind for a few minutes to gather my thoughts. Finally, I head back to my car. I bring up my holographic interface to document everything, then I send all the data to Chris; I’m hoping he can find a connection. A few days later: I encouraged Irene to come to the gym with me, and today, she finally worked up the courage to do it. She still isn't feeling well, but it’s a start; I can’t even begin to imagine what she’s going through right now. After we finish our workout, we linger for a bit to talk about Roy. Linna: I understand—he wanted to make more time for you once the project was over. Irene: The project was important to him, but... She gazes pensively at the ring she wears on her right hand. I touch her on the shoulder, and she looks up at me. Linna: I’m here for you, Irene. Come on, let’s take a shower, and then I’ll take you home. Irene: Thanks, Linna. What would I ever do without you? I offer her my hand; she takes it, and I help her to her feet. We both take a long, thorough shower; she seems to enjoy washing away all that heavy emotional baggage. It takes us about twenty minutes to get ready and leave the gym. We still have to walk through a section of the shopping street to reach the parking lot. Irene considers whether she needs anything else, but she doesn't stop at any of the stalls. I let my gaze wander over the merchandise on display. Suddenly, something catches her attention. Irene: Uh, Linna—tell me, isn't that your car getting towed right over there? Linna: What do you mean...? You reached the end of this file. Don't forget to close it if you are finished.
