The sun is sinking toward the horizon. I don't know what possessed me to take on this silly dare—probably just to get Takahashi off my back. But what could possibly happen here? It’s just a forest, after all. The village elder did forbid us from entering the woods between dusk and dawn, though. I just hope I don't have to listen to the old man lecture me. What is that? Is someone singing? It sounds like a woman's voice. It must be Rei; Takahashi probably talked her into playing a prank on me. But I’m not going to let them get the better of me. I follow the singing; it’s a strange melody—I don't recognize it. She is singing about a lost love, a fallen one. There she is.
???: Hey, Rei, you can stop now; I’ve...
That isn't Rei. The woman looks at me with amber eyes. The last light of day sparkles within them. She wears a lovely black kimono held together by a sash. Such beauty in a place like this? Women like her are usually found only at the Imperial Court. She regards me with interest.
???: Sir, what are you doing here in the forest alone at this hour?
That’s rich, coming from her. I look around; surely she has bodyguards with her. But there isn't a soul in sight. Perhaps I should take her back to the village; it’s bound to be dangerous for her if she stays here alone in the dark.
Kenta: Please, call me Kenta. I’m sorry if I disturbed you; my friends talked me into a dare. Anyway, it’ll be dark soon. If you like, come back to our village with me—it’s safer there than here.
???: A dare? Are you brave, then, Kenta? You seem too young to me to have ever felt the warmth of a woman.
Kenta: Well... uh... yes...
What kind of question is that? Her gaze pierces right through me—those eyes... I can't help but swallow hard.
???: Would you like to lie with me tonight, Kenta?
Her hands undo the sash holding her kimono together and open it. I blush as she reveals the bare skin beneath. She holds my gaze; those eyes... they hold me spellbound. My throat is dry; I can no longer think clearly—what is happening here? Something moves beneath her kimono, and as she slips it off, I turn pale... Spider legs... sprouting from her back...
Kenta: By Bishamonten, you... you... are... a... Jorōgumo...
The gleam in her eyes shifts to a glow that chills me to the bone. Her teeth take on the look of a predator's; anticipating the hunt to come, she runs her hands over her naked body. Her prey firmly in sight... me... The Elder was right...
Jorōgumo: Oh Kenta, my dear, what is it? Do I not please you?
Her voice lets me think clearly for a moment... I scream... and run away from here—away from her—as fast as I can.
Jorōgumo: And so it begins.
Her words are accompanied by a laugh so profoundly evil that it makes my blood run cold. I can hear her legs moving as she picks up my trail. I run, I scream; my lungs burn, my muscles cramp. The laughter doesn't stop, and it’s getting closer. I stumble over a root and fall to the ground; I look back—she is fast, too fast... she leaps, and then she is over me...
Jorōgumo: Gotcha!
