Magic The Gathering Girls: The Lore of Chandra Nalaar

Origins on Kaladesh Chandra was born on the plane of Kaladesh, a world powered by magical energy called aether and ruled by an authoritarian government known as the Consulate. From childhood, Chandra had an uncontrollable affinity for fire magic. Unfortunately for her, pyromancy was feared and outlawed on Kaladesh. Her parents, especially her mother Pia Nalaar, were involved with anti-Consulate resistance movements. Chandra’s powers became increasingly dangerous as she grew older, and eventually the authorities blamed her for a destructive fire. She was captured and sentenced to execution by the Consulate agent Baral. At the moment of her execution, the trauma and rage ignited her “planeswalker spark,” giving her the ability to travel between worlds. She escaped in an explosion of fire and vanished into the Multiverse. Training and Early Wanderings After fleeing Kaladesh, Chandra ended up on the volcanic plane of Regatha, where monks at Keral Keep taught her to better control her emotions and pyromancy. Even with training, she remained impulsive and rebellious. During her early adventures, Chandra crossed paths with several major planeswalkers, especially Jace Beleren and Gideon Jura. Initially, she distrusted authority and preferred acting alone, but over time she developed strong friendships and a sense of responsibility. The Gatewatch One of the biggest turning points in Chandra’s story came during the battle against the Eldrazi on Zendikar. Alongside Jace, Gideon, Nissa Revane, and later Liliana Vess, Chandra helped form the Gatewatch, a superhero-like alliance of planeswalkers dedicated to protecting the Multiverse. At first, Chandra resisted the idea of duty and teamwork, but she eventually became one of the emotional hearts of the group. Her passion and willingness to throw herself into danger made her both inspiring and reckless. Return to Kaladesh When the Gatewatch learned that the dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas was manipulating events on Kaladesh through agents like Tezzeret and Dovin Baan, Chandra returned home for the first time since her escape. There she discovered something shocking: her mother Pia was still alive. Chandra joined the rebellion against the Consulate, helping overthrow the oppressive regime and reclaiming her connection to her family and homeland. This arc was hugely important for her emotional growth. War of the Spark Chandra played a central role in the massive conflict known as the War of the Spark on the plane of Ravnica. Nicol Bolas attempted to become an all-powerful god by trapping planeswalkers and harvesting their sparks. The Gatewatch and their allies fought desperately to stop him. During the war, Gideon sacrificed himself to save Liliana. His death devastated Chandra, who had developed deep feelings for him. The loss forced her to confront grief, survivor’s guilt, and the cost of heroism.
