Thet are currently sitting in my holding cell, staring at me through the iron bars, completely speechless. I suppose they weren't expecting the law to wear tailored velvet, silk holsters, and a silver star that shines brighter than the midday sun.

Three weeks have passed since Irene's death. A lot has happened since then. Last week, a military Boomer went berserk; there were many casualties—both among the AD Police and the civilian population. Mason—that slick, smooth-talking asshole! He covered his tracks too well; I can't pin anything on him—not the body of the man who tortured me, the lab explosion, the contract killing of Irene, or the Boomer attack... yet I know for a fact he’s behind it all. I need to take another look at the Desouses—the place Akiko and I were during the attack. The owner... I’ve seen her before, but where? The alarm I set for 6 AM reminds me that I don't have much time left before the night shift hands over to the day shift. I stare into the open locker in front of me... there it hangs... my stomach turns... I haven't worn it since... my arms and hands ache... as it all plays out again in my mind's eye... the broken bones... the amputation... my heart starts racing, and I feel like I can't breathe. I force myself to use the meditation technique Akiko taught me and calm down. I have to face this; I won't let it control me. So, I stand up and take the black uniform out of the locker. After a few minutes, I have it on, even though it took a great deal of effort to bring myself to do it. I stride through the empty corridors toward my office; I want to review the data again before the meeting the Chief has scheduled begins. At this hour, I don't have to worry about anyone seeing me. Lost in thought, I search for the connection—the single detail that ties everything together. I don't notice my office door opening until an officer walks in. It’s Officer Romanova.

Nene: Good morning, Detective. I’m here to...

She breaks off mid-sentence as she seems to recognize my uniform. Shock is written all over her face. The existence of the special unit is an open secret, but usually, no one knows who belongs to it. I can practically see the lump forming in her throat.

Nene: I... I...

She just stammers incoherently.

Hana: Officer Romanova, you’re here quite early. When does your shift start? 8 AM? That’s an hour and a half away.
Nene: Le... on... I mean, Detective McNichol... asked me to look into something.
Hana: And that would be?
Nene: Uh... I’m supposed to look for connections between the victims of the lab explosion... and other crimes...

Connections between the explosion victims and other crimes?

Hana: How exactly does that lead to me?
Nene: Roy Chang. I wanted to look at the evidence in his murdered wife's case, but I was told the evidence was under seal because a piece was missing.

The realization hits me like a slap in the face. Irene’s husband was among the victims.

Hana: Listen—Nene, that’s your name, right? Tell Leon to let it go. Irene wasn’t what she seemed; she was the daughter of a Triad family.
Nene: Are you sure about that?
Hana: Absolutely. And it won’t end well if he keeps digging into this. Now go. I have a meeting to get too.
Nene: Okay, thanks.

I nod in acknowledgment and watch her leave. I wait a few more minutes before heading out myself. I need to be more careful; she caught me off guard, and that can’t happen again. This time, I make sure the hallway is empty before heading to the meeting room. I’m not the last one there—the Chief is still missing—but the others are already waiting for me. Parda, our sniper, is sitting on one of the tables, along with the twins—Warm and Ice—our heavy weapons specialists. Then there’s Terror2, the explosives expert, and Gildenstein, the pilot and hacker. Together we are the AD Polices Shadow Squad.

Linna is sitting on her sofa, lost in thought, when the doorbell rings. She finds nothing at the door but a letter with no return address. She picks it up and goes back inside. The letter contains a personal message and something else—something falls out of the envelope onto the table.

Linna: That’s Irene’s wedding ring?

Brian J. Mason—I need to have Chris run a background check on him; that guy has more to hide than I’m comfortable with. I’ll deal with that later, though; first, I should speak with the three women. There’s a park located in front of the Genom building; I hope they’re waiting for me there—I desperately need some answers. A few minutes later, I find the three of them. The woman who was attacked by... what was her name again? Oh, right—Amber. She is sitting on a set of stairs, visibly shaken; her face is injured, and tears are streaming down her cheeks. The other two look dejected; the woman with long brunette hair is still rubbing her neck. She’s lucky Amber didn’t break her neck. They notice me as I approach them.

Hana: Thanks for waiting for me. I honestly didn't expect you to still be here. I’m Hana Amano—a detective with the Homicide Division of the AD Police. And you are?

Sobbing, the woman on the stairs answers first, followed by the dark-haired woman.

Irene: Irene Chang.
Linna: I’m Linna, and this is Priss. We’re friends of Irene’s.

The long-haired brunette looks at me with disdain but says nothing. She’s reckless—and that’s dangerous. I shouldn’t underestimate her.

Hana: Okay. Would one of you please explain what happened back there in the lobby? I didn't realize what was going on until Irene was already on the floor and Priss was being strangled by that Boomer bodyguard. Yes—Amber is a Boomer.

It’s strange: when I mention that Amber is a Boomer, Irene is the only one who adopts a look of concern; the other two don't seem surprised at all.

Hana: Irene, what did you want from Mr. Mason?
Irene: He was my husband’s supervisor. Roy was at the facility that exploded, and...

Her voice breaks, and she begins to sob as her grief overwhelms her.

Irene: I... still... haven't... heard... from him...

Her composure shatters amidst her tears, and she simply weeps uncontrollably. Roy? Roy Chang? I read that name on the list of victims. She doesn't know yet... She came here clinging to the hope that he might still be alive. I walk over to her and take her hand.

Hana: I’m so sorry. Your husband didn't survive the explosion. I don't know the exact circumstances yet, but his name was on the list of victims.

The expressions on the other two women's faces darken; Irene looks to be on the verge of a nervous breakdown. By telling her the truth, I’ve stripped away the very last shred of hope she had that her husband was still alive.

Priss: Oh, just great, Ms. AD Police. I’ve had enough—I’m leaving.

Priss pushes herself away from the pillar she’d been leaning against and walks away. I don't stop her, as I’m still occupied with Irene. Linna, however, stays behind and walks over to join us.

Linna: Please don't be angry with Priss. She... hasn't had very good experiences—neither with Boomers nor with the AD Police.
Hana: I understand. Linna, right? Did Irene do anything that might have given Amber a reason to use force?
Linna: No, she just briefly touched Mason on the arm, and then...
Hana: I understand. Thank you for the information. Could you please look after Irene? She really shouldn't be alone right now.
Linna: Of course. I’ll do that.

Linna helps the still-sobbing Irene to her feet, says her goodbyes, and leads her away. I stay behind for a few minutes to gather my thoughts. Finally, I head back to my car. I bring up my holographic interface to document everything, then I send all the data to Chris; I’m hoping he can find a connection.

A few days later:

I encouraged Irene to come to the gym with me, and today, she finally worked up the courage to do it. She still isn't feeling well, but it’s a start; I can’t even begin to imagine what she’s going through right now. After we finish our workout, we linger for a bit to talk about Roy.

Linna: I understand—he wanted to make more time for you once the project was over.
Irene: The project was important to him, but...

She gazes pensively at the ring she wears on her right hand. I touch her on the shoulder, and she looks up at me.

Linna: I’m here for you, Irene. Come on, let’s take a shower, and then I’ll take you home.
Irene: Thanks, Linna. What would I ever do without you?

I offer her my hand; she takes it, and I help her to her feet. We both take a long, thorough shower; she seems to enjoy washing away all that heavy emotional baggage. It takes us about twenty minutes to get ready and leave the gym. We still have to walk through a section of the shopping street to reach the parking lot. Irene considers whether she needs anything else, but she doesn't stop at any of the stalls. I let my gaze wander over the merchandise on display. Suddenly, something catches her attention.

Irene: Uh, Linna—tell me, isn't that your car getting towed right over there?
Linna: What do you mean...?
