ðŧ BANSHEE â THE WAILING HERALD OF DEATH
ðŧ Race: Banshee (Bean SÃ / Death Spirit / Wailing Spirit)
ðïļ Origin: Irish and Celtic mythology. In this Bestiary, Banshees are spirits tied to death and the spirit world. Their origins vary: some are born as spirits, while others arise from deceased women bound to this world by grief, lost love, or violent death. Many are not evil; they simply announce approaching death.
â ïļ Danger Level: IIâIV â Low to very dangerous, depending on subspecies, age, spiritual power, and emotional state.
ðŋ Habitat:
Old graveyards, abandoned castles, ruins, misty forests, moors, forgotten villages, and former battlefields. Some remain bound to specific families or bloodlines for generations; others wander between the living world and the spirit realm.
ð Diet:
Banshees need no ordinary food. Spiritual energy sustains them, drawn from grief, memories, or emotions depending on their type. Peaceful ones absorb only excess energy, while vengeful Banshees may deliberately drain life force from the living.
âïļ Strengths:
- Foreseeing death and sensing dying souls
- Wailing songs that evoke grief, fear, or despair
- Partially incorporeal forms
- Invisibility in certain subspecies
- Sensing spirits and supernatural energy
- Traveling between the living and spirit worlds
- Devastating sonic screams in ancient or vengeful individuals
Ordinary Banshees cannot unleash destructive screams. Their lament is primarily a warning of death.
ðĄïļ Weaknesses:
- Spiritual circles and banishing spells
- Consecrated objects may weaken them
- Magical barriers can block incorporeal passage
- Emotional turmoil may destabilize their powers
- Some are bound to places or bloodlines
- Powerful screams consume vast spiritual energy
ðŧ Subspecies:
- Wailing Banshee (Level II) The most common and peaceful type. Announces approaching deaths through mournful songs and avoids confrontation. Her lament causes no physical harm.
- Guardian Banshee (Level IIâIII) Bound to a family, bloodline, or place, protecting generations and warning of death. May repel intruders with visions, illusions, or overwhelming fear. Usually lacks destructive screams.
- Vengeful Banshee (Level IIIâIV) Often born from a soul trapped by betrayal, murder, or unbearable grief. Her deadly scream can paralyze enemies, damage hearing, and inflict severe internal injuries. Highly unpredictable.
- Ancient Banshee (Level IV) A spirit surviving centuries or millennia. Possesses extraordinary spiritual senses, powerful illusions, and destructive sonic screams. Some guard ancient tombs or follow forgotten noble families.
ðĨ Social Behavior:
Mostly solitary. Peaceful Banshees avoid the living and appear mainly to warn of death. Family-bound spirits may develop deep affection for those they watch over. Rare gatherings at sites of great tragedy are called Wailing Choirs. Their songs may carry for miles but are not automatically destructive.
âĪïļ Love and Bonds:
Love between a Banshee and a living being is extremely rare and almost always tragic. Though capable of deep affection, her connection to the spirit world makes an ordinary relationship difficult. Some fall for mortals whose deaths they can already foresee; others become Banshees after losing someone they loved.
A Banshee in love may desperately protect her partner despite knowing she cannot easily change fate. After their death, she might guard their grave for centuries. Lasting bonds between Banshees are possible but uncommon.
ð Researcher's Report:
Records of the Royal Institute for Supernatural Beings
âMany believe a Banshee is a malicious creature whose scream brings death. This is largely false. Most are not hunters but witnesses to death. Their lament is a warning, not a threat. Only vengeful or exceptionally ancient Banshees wield their voices as devastating weapons.
We once documented a Banshee who had remained beside her beloved's grave for over two hundred years. Asked why, she simply replied:
âHis life ended long ago. My love did not.â
So do not immediately draw your weapon when you hear a Banshee sing. The being you fear may be the one suffering most.â
