BetterWaifu members post their AI-generated anime art publicly, and every post is tagged with the characters and details it shows. We counted 152,928 public posts, from the site's first months in mid-2025 to November 2026, to see who people make, what gets liked, and how AI art differs from what artists draw.
The short version:
Nami leads with 1,457 posts, and One Piece places three characters in the top 20, with Nico Robin and Boa Hancock. The list leans towards characters who've been around for a decade or more: Yoruichi and Rangiku from Bleach, Tsunade from Naruto, Tifa from Final Fantasy VII, Princess Peach and Chun-Li.
The newer faces are mostly from recent hit anime: Yor Forger from Spy x Family, Makima from Chainsaw Man, and Mitsuri and Shinobu from Demon Slayer.
To compare, we divided each character's BetterWaifu posts by their explicit posts on Danbooru, the largest anime art archive. Most characters get fewer posts on BetterWaifu, since Danbooru has been collecting art since 2005. But a handful get more.
Shinobu has 190 BetterWaifu posts for every 100 on Danbooru, Mitsuri 178, Yoruichi 174 and Tsunade 163. These are characters fans have loved for years but that artists, who tend to draw whatever is new, have moved on from.
At the other end is Genshin Impact. Ganyu has just 10 BetterWaifu posts for every 100 on Danbooru, Raiden Shogun 18 and Lumine 22. Gacha games are drawn constantly by artists, often for events and new releases, but they're a smaller share of what fans make for themselves. Genshin Impact is still the most-posted franchise overall, because it has so many characters.
Posting is one thing; what the community likes is another. A post with one of these characters gets 38 likes on average. Cynthia posts average 62, Aerith 62 and Yor Forger 61.
Some characters punch above their weight. Darkness from KonoSuba is only the 27th most-posted character but the 4th most liked. Nami, the most-posted of all, averages 33 likes, below the site average: there are simply a lot of Nami posts to choose from.
Genshin Impact has the most posts, 3,390, spread across dozens of characters. One Piece is close behind with 3,082, and Bleach, a series that ended its original run in 2016, is fourth. Mario makes the top five on Princess Peach, Rosalina and Bowsette.
Black hair makes up 24% of hair-colour tags on BetterWaifu, against 18% on Danbooru since 2024. Orange and red are more common too, helped by Nami and Rias Gremory. Grey and pink are less common than on Danbooru, where grey and white hair have been rising fast (see our 20 years of anime art trends).
Some differences are about how the art is made. 23% of explicit Danbooru posts since 2024 have a censor bar, mostly because Japanese law requires it in published work; on BetterWaifu it's 1.7%. Speech bubbles are on 12% of Danbooru posts, from comics and short stories, and on just 1.6% of BetterWaifu posts.
Others are about taste. A man appears in 40% of BetterWaifu posts, against 53% on Danbooru: fans more often want the character on her own, looking at the viewer. Animal ears and halos, both big in recent gacha games, are less common too. And AI images rarely sit on a plain background: 8% against 14%.
BetterWaifu never really sleeps. Over the last four weeks, the quietest hour of the day still saw 77% as many images as the busiest, because members are spread around the world. The busiest stretch is 15:00 to 18:00 UTC, late morning in New York and late afternoon in Europe. Monday is the busiest day and Friday the quietest.
The site is also growing quickly. In December 2025 members published 1,038 posts; in October 2026 they published 19,740, which got 901 thousand likes between them.
