👻 Home (not) alone
Ready for a scary story? Ready or not, I start! (and, if you don't see the shadows, you should add brightness 😏)
The house was quiet.
Her parents and brother had gone out for the evening, but they still hadn't returned.
For the first time, she had the whole house to herself.
Where are they? What's taking them so long? They should be home by now!
At 2:47 a.m., she woke. A nightmare. Goosebumps covered her skin, and a strange, dreadful feeling crept over her.
Why is it so dark?
None of the lights in the house were working. The entire house was plunged into darkness.
She froze.
She felt someone staring at her. Or something. She couldn't see anything, but she could sense a presence.
There was no one else in the house. At least, there shouldn't have been.
She grabbed her flashlight. Looked under her bed and searched her room... Nothing
Her parents' bedroom was empty. Her brother's room was quiet, too.
Should I go downstairs? she wondered. The hallway is so long… and that staircase looks terrifying in the dark!
She sat down on the floor and hesitated.
Okay, let's go! I've got my flashlight, and there's nobody here, she whispered to herself.
Slowly, she made her way down the stairs.
The hallway was empty.
She checked the kitchen. The bathroom. The living room and the guest room, too.
Inside the closets. Behind the curtains. Under every bed. Nothing.
Yet every time she turned around, the darkness seemed to move.
A tall, shadowy figure stood silently behind her. Always...
A woman's silhouette. Two faint, amber eyes.
But whenever the girl turned her flashlight toward it, there was only darkness.
She searched every corner. Every room. Every hiding place.
Until she finally returned to her bedroom. Exhausted, she sat on the bed, clutching her flashlight.
There's nobody here, she whispered.
Then, from somewhere behind her, a woman's voice whispered back:
I know. I've been looking for you, too.
The flashlight flickered.
Once... Twice... Then went out.
And in the darkness, two amber eyes dimly glowed.
Not across the room. Not in the doorway.
Right beside her face.
She had never been home alone. Not even for a moment.
She checked under the bed... She never checked who was in it.
