📖 BESTIARIUM – ENTRY 022
🦭 SELKIES – THE HIDDEN SOULS OF THE SEA
🦭 Race: Selkie (Seal Folk / Marine Shapeshifter)
🏛️ Origin:
Scottish and North Atlantic folklore, especially the Orkney and Shetland Islands. Selkies are ancient, intelligent sea beings who transform between human and seal forms using a unique magical sealskin.
⚠️ Danger Level: I–II – Low to moderate, depending on subspecies, strength, and abilities. Usually peaceful and shy, but fiercely protective of their families.
🌊 Habitat:
Remote islands, rocky coasts, hidden bays, cold seas, and marine caves. They avoid crowded settlements, preferring secluded shores and small colonies.
🦭 Appearance:
In human form, Selkies resemble ordinary humans, with varying features. Their seal form has thick fur, flippers, and natural seal senses. Fur colors range from silver-gray and brown to black.
✨ The Magical Sealskin:
Every Selkie possesses a unique sealskin permanently bound to their existence.
Wearing it transforms them into a seal; removing it restores human form.
If stolen or hidden, they cannot become seals. No Selkie can use another's skin.
If destroyed, their shapeshifting ability may be permanently lost.
💪 Abilities:
- Human-to-seal transformation
- Exceptional swimming and diving
- Resistance to freezing seawater
- Excellent underwater navigation
- Sensing currents and weather changes
- Great agility in seal form
Selkies must regularly surface to breathe air.
✨ Magic:
Most possess no magic beyond shapeshifting. Rare individuals develop healing, limited water magic, or spiritual perception. Their powers are generally weaker than those of powerful Sea Sirens.
🏝️ Society and Behavior:
Selkies live alone, in families, or coastal colonies. They have no vast kingdoms or organized armies.
Experienced elders serve as advisers. Freedom, family, trust, and protecting their sealskins are sacred values. They remain cautious around outsiders.
🦭 Subspecies:
🌊 Coastal Selkie:
The most common type, inhabiting rocky shores and sheltered bays. Highly adaptable.
❄️ Ice Selkie:
Lives in polar waters, possessing exceptionally thick fur and resistance to extreme cold.
🌑 Deep-Sea Selkie:
Rare inhabitants of remote seas, capable of deep diving and navigating dark waters.
✨ Mystic Selkie:
Extremely rare individuals with additional abilities such as healing or limited water magic.
Subspecies differ in habitat, seal appearance, and natural abilities.
⏳ Lifespan:
Usually 90–120 years. Their development resembles that of humans. Elders are respected for their wisdom.
🐟 Diet:
Primarily fish, crustaceans, shellfish, and marine creatures. In human form, they can eat ordinary human food.
👶 Reproduction:
Selkies reproduce naturally and give birth to live offspring, usually in human form.
Their unique sealskin develops during early childhood through an innate magical bond. Families teach young Selkies to control their transformations.
Human-Selkie unions can produce offspring, but not every child inherits shapeshifting.
❤️ Love and Relationships:
Selkies can experience genuine love, loyalty, and lifelong partnerships with humans or their own kind.
Freedom and mutual trust are essential to their relationships.
Legends describe humans stealing Selkie skins, trapping them on land and forcing them into relationships.
Selkies consider such unions captivity, not true love.
Even when they love their children, captive Selkies often deeply miss the sea.
Recovering their skin restores their freedom to choose between land and ocean.
Genuine human-Selkie relationships are possible when their independence is respected.
🤝 Relations with Other Races:
Selkies cautiously approach outsiders. They may trade with humans, mermaids, or other sea peoples and occasionally rescue lost sailors.
However, they distrust anyone threatening their families or stealing their skins.
⚔️ Weaknesses:
- Lost Sealskin: Prevents transformation.
- Destroyed Sealskin: May permanently remove shapeshifting.
- Physical Vulnerability: Human forms lack supernatural strength.
- Separation from the Sea: Causes longing and emotional distress.
- Binding Magic: Can temporarily suppress transformations.
📜 Special Characteristics:
A Selkie's sealskin is an irreplaceable part of their supernatural existence, not ordinary clothing.
Stealing one is among the gravest crimes in Selkie society.
Selkies symbolize freedom, love, and the sea. Though peaceful, they fiercely defend their families and independence.
