The Drunken Clam was quieter than usual when Lois slipped onto the stool beside Jerome. The low hum of conversation and the soft clink of glasses gave the place a slower rhythm, one that made every glance linger just a little longer. Jerome noticed her immediately, offering a calm smile as he wiped down the counter. “Didn’t expect to see you here alone tonight.” Lois tilted her head, returning the look with quiet confidence. “Sometimes it’s nice to change the routine.” One drink turned into two, their conversation drifting from casual jokes to something more personal—shared looks, small pauses, a growing awareness of each other that neither of them rushed to interrupt. Jerome leaned in slightly when he spoke, his voice lower now, and Lois didn’t pull away. If anything, she matched his energy, her posture relaxed but intentional. By the time they stepped outside, the night air felt charged. The streetlights cast a warm glow, and for a moment they simply stood there, close enough to feel it—the pull neither of them had acknowledged until now. Lois broke the silence first, her voice softer. “You ever think about what it’d be like… if we stopped pretending this wasn’t here?” Jerome held her gaze, steady and certain. “Yeah. He reached for her hand, and she let him, fingers intertwining as if it had always been that simple. When the door closed behind them later, the outside world faded completely.
