📖 BESTIARIUM – ENTRY 008
🧜♀️ MERMAID – THE DAUGHTERS OF THE DEEP SEA
🧜♀️ Race: Mermaid (Merfolk / Aquatic Humanoids)
🏛️ Origin: Worldwide mythology and folklore, particularly maritime traditions of Europe and Asia.
⚠️ Danger Level: I–III – Harmless to dangerous (depending on subspecies, experience, equipment, and magical abilities).
🌿 Habitat:
Oceans, coastal waters, coral reefs, underwater caves, lakes, and large rivers. Their settlements range from small reef villages to fortified cities in the deep sea. Some groups live nomadic lives, following ocean currents or schools of fish.
🍽️ Diet:
Primarily omnivorous. Their diet includes fish, shellfish, crustaceans, algae, and aquatic plants. Food preferences and hunting methods vary depending on habitat and culture.
⚔️ Strengths:
- Endurance swimmers and excellent divers
- Ability to breathe underwater indefinitely
- Sensitivity to currents and underwater vibrations
- High intelligence, craftsmanship, and cooperation
- Excellent knowledge of their surroundings and skilled defense of their settlements
- Certain subspecies possess special magical abilities
🛡️ Weaknesses:
- Usually severely restricted on land
- Prolonged exposure to dry conditions threatens their health
- Vulnerable to pollution and habitat destruction
- Sudden temperature changes affect certain subspecies
- Often physically weaker than sea sirens in direct combat
🧬 Subspecies:
🐚 Coastal Mermaid – Danger Level I–II
Inhabits bays and shallow coastal waters. Often sociable and curious, establishing villages and trading settlements. Usually possesses no innate magic.
🪸 Reef Mermaid – Danger Level I–III
Possesses colorful scales and agile tail fins. Forms closely connected reef communities and fiercely defends its homeland. Some bloodlines possess minor water or protective magic.
🌌 Deep-Sea Mermaid – Danger Level II–III
Adapted to darkness and extreme water pressure; some possess bioluminescent patterns. Lives in secluded city-states or kingdoms. Rare magical bloodlines can produce light or influence ocean currents.
💧 Freshwater Mermaid – Danger Level I–II
Inhabits rivers and lakes, often living in small tribes or family groups. Knows hidden waterways and remains cautious around strangers. Magical abilities are rare among this subspecies.
✨ Magic:
Magic is not a universal trait among merfolk. It occurs only in certain subspecies and bloodlines. Even among these groups, not every individual possesses the same abilities. Water, protective, and light magic are the most common forms, while powerful spells remain rare and require considerable energy.
👥 Society and Culture:
Mermaids establish family groups, nomadic tribes, fishing villages, trading cities, and great kingdoms. Their traditions, systems of government, and relationships with other races vary considerably. Some openly trade with outsiders, while others strictly protect their territories.
🧬 Evolutionary Relationship:
Over many generations, sea sirens evolved from an early predatory mermaid lineage. They specialized in physical strength, ambush hunting, and hypnotic vocal magic.
Today, they are considered a separate and significantly more dangerous species (Danger Level IV–V) and are avoided by many merfolk communities.
📜 Researcher's Note:
"Those who believe only one people lives beneath the waves know little of the sea. Entire worlds lie between a humble reef village and a deep-sea kingdom — and somewhere in the darkness lurk the terrifying descendants of a long-forgotten tribe."
