Empty Carriage

The night train cut through the darkened countryside, its windows showing only scattered distant lights against the black. As a night-shift conductor with my husband often away, the solitude pressed down hardest in these quiet hours. In the empty last carriage my device failed midway, leaving me restless and hollow. I found the conductor and asked quietly if he could help ease the loneliness my husband’s absence had created. He refused at once. “No. This is work, and I have a family.” Shame burned through me. I turned to go, moonlight shifting over the shadows outside, when he caught my wrist. “I was too harsh. I can’t just leave you like this.” We returned to the carriage. He held me gently, his kiss tender, and in that hurried closeness he eased what had been aching inside me. Afterward, staring at the blurred night rushing past, satisfaction faded quickly into a deeper guilt. I had betrayed the man I loved—the one whose absence I had just tried to escape—and the weight of it settled heavier than before.
