📖 BESTIARIUM – ENTRY 007
🐺 WEREWOLF – THE HUNTER OF MOONLIGHT
🐺 Race: Werewolf (Lycanthrope / Wolf Shapeshifter)
🏛️ Origin: European folklore, especially Germanic, Norse, and Eastern European traditions.
⚠️ Danger Level: II–IV – Low to extreme, depending on lineage, age, experience, and control over transformation.
🌿 Habitat:
Dense forests, mountains, secluded valleys, caves, ruins, and remote settlements. Werewolves favor territories with abundant prey and natural shelter. Some secretly live among humans, while packs defend larger hunting grounds. Hidden dens often provide refuge during involuntary transformations.
🍖 Diet:
Primarily carnivorous. In human form, most eat ordinary food; transformed werewolves crave meat and hunt deer, boars, hares, and other mammals. Feral individuals may attack humans. Their appetite increases sharply after exhausting transformations or prolonged hunts.
⚔️ Strengths:
- Superhuman strength, speed, and endurance
- Sharp claws, powerful fangs, and heightened reflexes
- Excellent scent tracking, hearing, and night vision
- Rapid healing and resistance to injury
- Strong instincts and coordinated pack hunting
- Increased power under the full moon
- Voluntary transformation in experienced individuals
🛡️ Weaknesses:
- Silver causes severe, slow-healing wounds
- Fire and extreme heat hinder regeneration
- Strong odors and high-pitched sounds overwhelm the senses
- Instincts, fear, or anger may trigger loss of control
- Full moons can force unwilling transformations
- Prolonged combat demands enormous energy
- Magical or cursed wounds heal more slowly
🧬 Known Subspecies:
Cursed Werewolf: Once human, transformed by a curse, ritual, or magical infection. Shifting is often painful and involuntary.
Born Werewolf: Inherits lycanthropy and usually learns greater control from an early age.
Feral Werewolf: Surrenders largely to predatory instincts, becoming highly aggressive and unpredictable.
Alpha Werewolf: A respected or exceptionally powerful individual who may lead a pack through strength, experience, or trust.
Ancient Werewolf: A rare centuries-old survivor whose exceptional experience and supernatural longevity grant remarkable control.
🌕 Transformation and Moon Phases:
Werewolves may possess three forms:
- Human: Mostly ordinary in appearance, sometimes with heightened senses.
- Hybrid: A muscular wolf-human with fur, claws, and fangs.
- Wolf: A complete wolf form, often larger than a natural wolf.
Not every werewolf can assume all three. The full moon strengthens many, but may force inexperienced or cursed individuals to transform. Born or trained werewolves can often shift at will and retain their minds.
🐾 Social Behavior:
Some live alone to protect others or avoid rival werewolves. Others form family packs or close-knit communities. Experienced members teach the young to manage their instincts. An Alpha may lead by trust, wisdom, or strength; not all packs follow a strict hierarchy. Packs defend their territory, especially where offspring live.
❤️ Reproduction and Offspring:
Born werewolves can inherit and pass on lycanthropic traits. Enhanced senses or partial transformations may emerge in childhood or adolescence. Youngsters often need guidance from relatives or pack elders. Cursed werewolves arise through magic or, in certain lineages, a transmitted bite. Not every bite spreads the curse. Inherited traits and magical curses may follow different rules even within neighboring packs.
🧠 Intelligence:
In human form, most think like ordinary people. Controlled shapeshifters retain memory, personality, and tactical judgment even in wolf or hybrid form. Feral individuals rely on hunger, fear, and territorial instincts. Skilled pack leaders can coordinate elaborate hunts and defenses.
📜 Special Characteristics:
Not all werewolves are bloodthirsty. Some regard lycanthropy as a curse; others embrace it as their natural identity. Their connection to the moon varies by lineage, and experienced individuals may draw on wolf-like senses without fully changing shape. Strong family bonds and learned self-control can make peaceful coexistence with humans possible.
⚠️ Behavior During Encounters:
Stay calm, avoid threatening movements, and never assume a human-looking stranger is harmless. Exercise extra caution around full moons, unfamiliar packs, and young werewolves. Respect hunting territories and keep your distance from frightened or wounded individuals. Never deliberately provoke an Alpha. If a werewolf shows signs of losing control, retreat slowly rather than attempting to confront or restrain it.
📖 Researcher's Note:
"Not every werewolf is a monster. Some fight their instincts each night; others live in harmony with the wolf within. But remember: when you face a pack, you rarely face just one hunter."
