📖 BESTIARIUM – ENTRY 009
🎶 SIREN – THE SEDUCTIVE VOICE OF DEATH
🎶 Race: Siren (Sea Siren / Avian Siren)
🏛️ Origin: Greek mythology and European seafaring legends. In the Bestiary, sirens are considered two independently evolved lineages originating from mermaids and harpies.
⚠️ Danger Level: III–V – Dangerous to extremely dangerous (depending on subspecies, age, experience, and magical abilities).
🌿 Habitat:
Sirens prefer remote hunting grounds. Sea sirens inhabit deep waters, underwater caves, shipwrecks, and sunken ruins.
Avian sirens dwell on rocky islands, coastal cliffs, and inaccessible sea caves.
🍖 Diet:
Primarily carnivorous. Their diet consists of fish, crustaceans, seabirds, and larger marine animals.
Sea sirens occasionally prey on intelligent aquatic beings. Avian sirens prefer luring their victims into dangerous terrain.
⚔️ Strengths:
- Innate hypnotic siren song
- Manipulation of emotions and perception
- Ability to imitate other voices
- High intelligence and powerful hunting instincts
- Skilled deception and ambush hunting
- Adaptation to their respective habitats
- Powerful individuals can influence multiple victims simultaneously
🛡️ Weaknesses:
- Vocal injuries weaken their magic
- Disruptive noises can interrupt their singing
- Hearing protection and magical defenses reduce its effects
- Avian sirens are usually physically weaker than harpies
- Sea sirens are bound to aquatic environments
- Without an audible song, their primary hunting weapon becomes ineffective
🧬 Evolution and Ancestry:
Sirens evolved from two different ancestral species. Sea sirens descended from early mermaids that adapted to predatory hunting in the deep sea.
Avian sirens evolved from harpy populations that increasingly specialized in voice imitation and magical deception.
This independent development of similar abilities is known as convergent evolution. Their shared vocal magic led researchers to classify both lineages as sirens, despite their lack of direct ancestry.
🐟 Subspecies I – Sea Siren:
⚠️ Danger Level: IV–V
Sea sirens possess a human upper body, a powerful fish tail, sharp teeth, and often additional predatory features.
They are aggressive, violent, and extremely territorial. Their singing induces trances, hallucinations, and disorientation. This allows them to lure victims into the depths, where their tremendous swimming speed and physical strength give them an advantage.
They usually live alone. When hunting larger prey, they occasionally form hunting groups of two to five individuals.
🪶 Subspecies II – Avian Siren:
⚠️ Danger Level: III–V
Avian sirens possess a human upper body, feathered wings, bird-like legs, and sharp talons.
They are generally slimmer and physically weaker than harpies, but possess greater magical abilities. Their singing awakens longing, curiosity, trust, or desire. By imitating familiar voices, they deliberately lure victims into traps.
As patient and calculating hunters, they avoid direct combat. They live alone or in small groups and defend their territories.
🪶 Distinction from Harpies:
Harpies are powerful aerial hunters that overwhelm their prey through speed, flight strength, and sharp talons. Their descendants, the avian sirens, instead specialized in vocal magic. Rather than pursuing their victims, they lure them closer.
🧜♀️ Distinction from Mermaids:
Mermaids form intelligent aquatic civilizations with their own cultures and communities. The more aggressive sea sirens evolved from an early predatory lineage. Their predatory features and hypnotic singing distinguish them from their ancestors.
👥 Social Behavior:
Sea sirens generally live alone and only temporarily join forces for hunting. Avian sirens occasionally form small communities whose synchronized songs can be particularly dangerous.
Both species defend their territories. However, individual sirens may be peaceful, especially outside their hunting grounds.
📜 Researcher's Note:
"From the depths of the oceans and the heights of coastal cliffs, two different hunters emerged. Their bodies may differ, but both have mastered the same deadly art: They do not need to chase their prey. A single song is enough."
