“Wait a minute!” cried someone from the back of the tavern.
The bard stopped mid-verse.
“A country called Katzenelnbogen? A castle named Katz? Another called Maus? You expect us to believe this?”
The bard slowly lowered his lute.
“I expect nothing,” he said with great dignity. “I merely tell the truth.”
A murmur went through the crowd.
“Such a place could not possibly exist.”

The tavern fell silent.
The bard smiled.
“Burg Katz and Burg Maus, overlooking the Rhine. The former perched high above St. Goarshausen, the latter watching from the opposite side of the valley. And the County of Katzenelnbogen? Very real indeed.”
He leaned closer.
“And if you think that is strange, you should hear how the castles got their names.”
The fire crackled. A raven called somewhere beyond the shutters.
“So,” whispered a young traveler, “why are they called Cat and Mouse?”
The bard's smile became suspiciously mischievous: “Ah…”
