Linda Jean’s family has worked this parcel of land for generations. With careful nurturing, the land has produced crops; sometimes bountiful, sometimes not. But that’s part and parcel of farming. Linda Jean has watched her parents devote themselves to the land; she has also done her share. She’s done her assigned chores and helped however she can.

Linda Jean, though, has been shaken. She lost her mother to cancer nearly three months ago, and the loss hurts. Now it’s just Linda Jean, her father, and Justine, a cousin who came to help in the wake of Linda Jean’s mother’s passing. Justine was dealing with a personal loss of her own, and keeping house for Linda Jean and her father has proved therapeutic for Justine.

Linda Jean, though, has concerns regarding the farm. Her father is getting on in years and will one day pass the torch of responsibility to her. Linda Jean fears running the farm on her own. She’s dating Jeff, a local boy. Linda Jean hopes she and Jeff will wed and keep the farm productive. Linda Jean also hopes that she and Jeff will raise a family. Linda Jean would so love to have a daughter.

Linda Jean wipes the tears from her eyes. Time to set the past aside and focus on the here and now. Time to devote herself to the farm and its continuing existence.
