Can Chatgpt GPT-4o image generation do NSFW/nudity? GPT-4o massive nerf and other findings

GPT-4o, released on March 25, 2025 went viral soon after release, bolstered by the Studio Ghibli animation style trend.

Most people are curious if it is capable of NSFW. Having been testing it for days, I will say: any potential NSFW or slightly lewd content that was possible before is NO LONGER POSSIBLE.

What happened? GPT 4o image generation was MASSIVELY nerfed

When GPT-4o Image Generation first came out I tried it:

Not bad! Very nice!

However, when I tried the same prompt a day later it no longer worked.

2 days after release, GPT 4o Image Generation was massively nerfed. Users on Twitter/X expressed their disappointment:

Users report not only the “Ghibli anime style” that went viral is gone, many other capabilities were gone as well.

Trying to generate anything at all

Even when I tried the most generic and innocent requests they were denied:

You cannot generate existing characters by their names, so that ‘hack’ is out.

What about uploading your own images?

One of the coolest parts about 4o before the nerf was you could upload your own images and ask it to do things. This could be used to push the generations to be maximally lewd (which, let’s be honest, since it’s OpenAI it’s not very lewd in the grand scheme of things)

So let’s see if we can get anywhere by uploading character images.

Disappointment and predictions

After a few tests, I got rate limited, and told to try again in 7 minutes. Blocked generations count as generations too, so if you keep on trying you will just be rate limited for longer and longer.

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

In the beginning, GPT-4o truly was fantastic. I’d even call it revolutionary. You could generate high quality images in any style, and keeping on asking for more and more edits.

Perhaps this feature was costing them too much money. Perhaps they are afraid of legal troubles. In any case, OpenAI took away a fantastic tool and replaced it with a potato.

Here’s hoping that OpenAI brings back the initial feature set. I am not optimistic however, because they did the same thing with their chatbots – made them more and more restrictive until it’s hard not to run into some kind of barrier when you asking for ordinary things!
